Sarru, the dwarven pyre-keeper of the Sacred Pyre in Ulmira’s Step, possesses a strong, stocky build typical of her kind. Her primary responsibility is to tend the Sacred Pyre, essential for keeping the town warm and free from miasma. Sarru maintains a connection with Ygva, a witch residing near a collapsed mountainside shrine, acting as a point of contact for those seeking guidance regarding the Blessed Branch Ygva possesses.
When The Enduring Lesser Lights met her, Sarru proved a fit, well-outfitted dwarf in her early forties, serious about her training. She first offered only to guide them as far as she ranges to gather tinder and pyre-wood, then to point the way up to Ygva — but when the party chose instead to delve the titan’s tunnels, she came down with them as a guardian, leaving the pyre in others’ keeping. She urged them to decide what price they would pay before meeting the witch, warning that Ygva always wants something, though "I’ve never seen her take payment in money." Of Ygva herself, Sarru spoke fondly: curious about everything, once a resident of the town, and long inseparable from Kelun before she apprenticed under Oshel and moved up the mountain.
When approached by The Enduring Lesser Lights, Sarru attentively listened to their concerns about the darkened pyre in Drosven’s Gate. She confirmed that Ygva held the Blessed Branch they sought and provided detailed directions to the ruined shrine, cautioning them about the dangers of the path. Sarru described the pilgrimage stairs leading to the shrine as damaged yet climbable, warning that the journey posed both physical and spiritual risks due to the seepage of the Umbra. She noted that those who lingered too long in those heights often returned changed, reflecting Ygva's connection to the strangeness of the Umbra. Sarru’s careful responses and willingness to share her knowledge indicate her experience and understanding of the risks involved in seeking Ygva.
As a Guardian and member of The Enduring Lesser Lights, Sarru is recognized for her protective role among her companions. She gathers with them in Ulmira’s Step, a town built around the remains of a titan, before joining the return party into the caverns with Savel, Mellon, and Sylvie. Prior to their descent, Sarru receives protective wards from Sylvie, enhancing her readiness for the challenges ahead.
In the treacherous caverns, Sarru actively participates in discussions regarding their course of action. During a chaotic battle with a hulking brute, fire ignites from the ichor spilled by the creature, yet Sarru remains engaged in the fight alongside her companions. When Mellon charges into a crevice, Sarru expresses agreement with the decision to press on, demonstrating her commitment to the group's objectives and readiness to confront the threats posed by the goblins.
Recently, Sarru and Savel regrouped with their party after an encounter with slime creatures and goblins in a Mountain Pass. Accompanied by Yuki, she has been active in tactical discussions and ambush strategies. During an ambush, Sarru, Jamal, and Sylvie positioned themselves as visible bait on the lower path while Draz and Heyou took positions on the upper ledges. Following Draz's ignition of the Flammable Ooze, Sarru's group entered combat prepared. After the ambush, they assessed their route options, ultimately deciding to follow the lower path while Draz and Heyou scouted ahead.
As the party moved forward, Sarru was involved in decision-making and support activities during their encounter with an Underground Complex, which included a Stonewraith and goblin mechanics. She contributed to discussions for a short rest to recover from injuries and focused on healing and preparation alongside her allies. Sarru's interactions with the goblins during this rest period helped build rapport and secure supplies, highlighting her collaborative role within the group.
In a recent mission against a Guardian beast, Sarru provided ranged support alongside her companions Jamal, Draz, Sylvie, and Savel, near a bridge and a Sacred Tree. During the battle, she was struck by the Guardian beast after Jamal attacked it with a warhammer, sustaining damage. After the battle, Sarru assisted in investigating the fallen creature and discovered a Guardian's collar with a broken chain, suggesting a physical tether to the tree. She was part of the group that decided to escort Savel and herself back to Drosven’s Gate with the blessed branches, ensuring the continuation of their mission.
Recently, Sarru has drawn the notice of the Dimmers, a faction of mixed reputation. Alongside Savel, she departed Drosven’s Gate with a party that included Draz and Jamal. Their journey has led to sightings of Sarru and Savel among mutated townsfolk traveling toward Ulmira’s Step, indicating their current state may be linked to the mutations affecting their community. Borek, a fixer for the Dimmers, raised concerns about their safety and fate following their departure, suggesting that Sarru and Savel may be entangled in the Dimmers's affairs. Jamal later spotted them among a group of mutated individuals, raising questions about their current condition and the implications of their association with the Dimmers amidst the turmoil affecting their community.
In a recent confrontation, Sarru was incapacitated by a non-lethal strike from Heyou, who used a hidden attack during a chaotic battle. After the fight, Heyou dragged Sarru, tying her hands and stabilizing her to keep her unconscious but alive. Her presence was noted as the party debated their next course of action regarding Ulmira’s Step and Drosven’s Gate, highlighting the ongoing challenges she faces as a guardian amidst the turmoil.
