Mellon is a human ranger of the Ridgeborne, beast-bound to an animal companion. The Enduring Lesser Lights met him at Ulmira’s Step, among the five survivors of a delving party that had gone eight or nine strong into a newly-found tunnel deep in the fossilized titan’s ruins.
Draz found him by the fire, shirtless, painstakingly picking shards of glass shrapnel out of his own chest and back, and offered to help — clumsily driving a few pieces deeper in the process. Mellon described the tunnel: heavily trapped by someone who seemed to reset the traps behind the delvers as they went, pit traps and tripwires and shrapnel bombs changing each time they thought they had a pattern. They pressed roughly a mile and a half in over a week, lost people to the traps, found nothing, and turned back.
Undeterred, Mellon meant to return better-prepared and would take anyone willing; he gathered others to come with him, and when the party resolved to descend they joined his crew — Draz especially, on the strength of the rapport formed over the glass. He led them back down with his snow leopard Yuki at his side.
He did not come out with them. Deep in the crevice, after a goblin explosion collapsed the passage ahead, Mellon ran at the rockfall in some distress and his body passed insubstantially straight through the solid stone, vanishing to the far side — not dragged or compelled, but of his own accord, in a way that unnerved even Savel, who had travelled with him before. Yuki could not follow, and mourned at the fresh stone. What became of him is unknown; but the seeds of the change were already there — Draz recalled, too late, that when he had picked the glass shrapnel from Mellon’s body, some of the shards had seemed to be drawn into him rather than out.
