Blessed Branch

The Blessed Branch is a crucial item responsible for rekindling the sacred pyre in Drosven’s Gate. This mystical branch is essential as only a blessed variant possesses the power to restore the pyre's magical properties; ordinary fire proves ineffective. Recognizing this, Sylvie Cerridwen, a Ridgeborne wizard, spearheaded the group’s quest to acquire the branch following the pyre's extinguishing, underscoring her knowledge of sacred rituals.

After the pyre’s extinguishing, the group discovered that their efforts to eliminate the malevolent creatures that had arisen were futile, as darkness still shrouded the area. Sylvie suggested a quest to obtain the Blessed Branch, proposing two potential locations: Thistleglass to the west and Ulmira’s Step in the mountains, eventually favoring Ulmira’s Step due to its proximity. The acquisition of the Blessed Branch became central to their mission to protect their town from further threats, leading them to understand it could only be obtained from Ygva, the witch residing at the mountainside shrine. Local inhabitants often avoided Ygva due to her eerie ties to the Umbra. Upon their arrival in Ulmira’s Step, The Lesser Lights learned about the Blessed Branch from Sarru, a dwarven pyre-keeper. He confirmed its location and warned them of the perilous path to Ygva’s lair, rife with both physical and spiritual dangers.

The Blessed Branch is a significant five-foot long, half-foot thick object that possesses divine qualities. It was previously carried by a guardian beast tethered to a sacred tree, which had been burned and regrown, showing no signs of vitality. When a piece of the branch was burned, it produced a brief sensation of warmth reminiscent of a sunny day. Current developments have revealed that the Blessed Branch is also associated with a powerful guardian depicted as a purple, multi-eyed feline-like demon, indicative of its significance in combating encroaching darkness. The branch was observed held in the guardian's mouth, suggesting its revered status and the inherent danger surrounding it. The guardian exhibited intelligence and hostility upon approach, with previous interlopers eliminated but not consumed, signifying its protective role. A goblin negotiator shed light on possibilities for alliance, though contingent on the guardian’s defeat, adding further complexity to the quest for the Blessed Branch.

After defeating the guardian beast, three blessed branches of varying sizes were secured. The investigation revealed seed-like objects around the tree's base, identified as pine cone-like seed containers that could potentially grow new sacred trees if activated appropriately. The branches and seeds represent the remnants of the sacred tree's power and offer potential for future use, though the requirements for growth remain unclear.

In a chaotic encounter with Ygva, the party faced a significant setback when she intercepted them mid-throw with remarkable speed, seizing two of the Blessed Branches from Jamal and one from Sylvie, whom she fatally attacked. The loss of these artifacts, which were intended for a noble purpose, fell into Ygva's hands, whose motivations remain unclear. This event reshaped the party's goals and their understanding of the supernatural forces at play, marking a pivotal moment in their quest against the encroaching darkness.

The Blessed Branches are remnants of a once-vibrant glowing tree, associated with natural magic and vitality. They now symbolize loss after the tree's destruction, leading to a belief among the party that their quest for the branches has failed. Sylvie is central to the narrative surrounding the Blessed Branches, exhibiting physical traits such as a heartless chest filled with thick black viscous fluid, indicating a transformation linked to her lost heart and the branches. The party initially sought the branches to restore Sylvie’s heart, but the tree's demise has forced them to reconsider their goals. Sylvie's despair over the loss of the branches highlights their significance within the party's journey. Debates over potential paths forward reveal a connection to the witch and possibilities for healing. However, Sylvie's refusal to pursue the witch reflects her disillusionment regarding the Blessed Branches and their impact on her fate.

Recent developments have revealed that the Blessed Branch is linked to sacred rituals associated with the deity Caranthalis, the tree of light. Once ignited at a sacred pyre, it cannot be reclaimed. Ygva provided the Blessed Branch to the party after taking it from the Caranthalis altar, stating that a replacement would be necessary if her seed cultivation in trade failed. The party engaged Ygva in a trade, offering pinecone-like seeds in exchange for the Blessed Branch. Heyou, chosen for his stealth capabilities, used phasing Vambraces to conceal the branch inside the Living Fortress during their journey. The group intended to deliver the Blessed Branch to rekindle the pyre at Drosven’s Gate, treating it with care due to its significance and the potential consequences of its use.

The Blessed Branch is also linked to a group of travelers, including Draz, Sylvie, and Jamal, associated with their journey from Drosven’s Gate. Its significance is highlighted by Borek, a fixer for the Dimmers, who referenced the Blessed Branch while inquiring about two families, Sarru and Savel, who left with the group but did not return, suggesting their absence is noteworthy and tied to the fate of the Blessed Branch. In an encounter with Borek, Draz was questioned about the witch's test, indicating a connection between the Blessed Branch and mystical challenges. A binding rune on Draz's arm, identified by Borek as coercive, suggests the Blessed Branch has implications for memory and influence during their journey. The conversation sheds light on the complex dynamics surrounding the Blessed Branch and its impact on the travelers' experiences.

The Blessed Branch is an artifact associated with the Sacred Pyre in Ulmira’s Step, housed within the Living Fortress, a giant walking construct. It is believed to possess protective properties against malign forces, particularly those influenced by the Umbra. The Blessed Branch is sought to potentially relight the Sacred Pyre in Drosven’s Gate, which has lost its protective power. Its retrieval is considered a crucial step in restoring safety to the regions affected by the Umbra.

More recently, the Blessed Branch was revealed to be a magical artifact previously contained within the stone golem known as Bob. It is associated with the restoration of locations or entities, mentioned in relation to relighting the sacred pyre at Drosven’s Gate. Heyou retrieved the Blessed Branch from Bob after the party escaped Grithmaar Deep. The group had traded a seed for the Blessed Branch, indicating its value and the lengths they went to acquire it. The retrieval was notable, as it was one of the few items left in Bob after the golem became trapped underwater.
