Yol is an old giantess of Ulmira’s Step, more grey than brown in her hair now, who rarely leaves her modest, well-kept home. A pre-adolescent giant quietly steered Sylvie to her after the town healers rebuffed Sylvie’s offer of magical aid, saying that if anyone would speak of healing magic, it was Yol — who is rumored to carry some spark of that old power herself, whether once healed by it or once able to wield it.
When Sylvie visited her by night, Yol explained the town’s cold reaction: since the Veiled Gods departed, most of their magic — the Splendor domain, healing squarely among it — has left the world, and the community of Ulmira’s Step has chosen to reject it as an unwelcome reminder of the gods who abandoned them. Yol admits to holding a small spark of it herself, and to having learned not to use it. The witch, she says, takes care of them now, and the witch’s power "is the power of today, not the power of yesterday" — the Umbra, not the gods.
She confirmed for Sylvie that the current witch is Ygva — apprentice of the older Oshel, the witch Sylvie had once heard of — that the moon-rune Jara from Sylvie’s visions is Ygva’s own rune, and that the pyre-keeper Sarru knows Ygva and the dangerous route up to her shrine.
